Only time will reveal the true durability of the tray, but we were disappointed by its sheer feel out of the box. We had a complaint with the build quality of the main tray, which rolled off the bottom and felt as though it was made of cheap plastic. We’ve generally favored two information plates to one and observed that involving the principal plate for plain paper and the backplate for more modest photograph paper was much more convenient than constantly changing different sizes. The printer handles paper input with the primary 150-sheet tape as well as another 150-sheet plate collapsed from the back. Finally, two soft keys are located just below the screen for navigating the on-screen menus. The rest of the pad contains other shortcut keys, including a Navi button for on-screen menu assistance, a home button, an instant black and color copy button, two buttons for increasing and decreasing the number of copies and stop. Most of the time, we prefer the scroll wheel, but the buttons are also easy to use when you know exactly where to go. The wheel and “OK” button offer a satisfying click with each selection, but there’s also a four-way directional pad around the button if you’re not comfortable with the wheel. The menus are arranged in circles, and you use the touch buttons on the base panel to access the different settings. The control panel is located on the lid and houses a bright 3.5-inch color LCD similar to the screen on the Pixma MP970.
In addition, the main output tray and control panel can be folded to save space. Its silver and glossy black body exude stylish professionalism, and the scanner lid sits so flush with the main body that you can barely tell the difference. The all-in-one weighs a hefty 24 pounds thanks to a rear-mounted auto-duplexer for double-sided printing, so you might not want to move it around too much in your workspace. The Pixma MP980 AIO has the same shape as the rest of Canon’s MP series, but this year’s model gets a shrinking beam, measuring 7.9 inches high by 18.5 inches wide by 15.2 inches wide. Compared to the HP Photosmart Premium Fax all-in-one, which provides a cheaper fax machine and automatic document feeder, we think HP has a better deal. The $300 MP980 helps amateur photo enthusiasts with its large 3.5-inch LCD screen, easy-to-use control panel, and media card reader, but we weren’t satisfied with the tricky wireless setup, slower-than-average output speeds.
